about

Welcome to the free and the wild. Free Range is Ernestas Sadau and DKA co-founder Matt Weiner, and theirs is a uniquely dynamic and textured brew of mutant beat, acid industrial, slow psy-hop and hauntological EBM, churning and percolating with equal doses of the primordial and the futuristic. Wild Life being somewhat of an impressionistic concept album, the imagery here is animal-focused, but drawing on a kingdom more far-ranging and uncannily peculiar than anything we’ve been exposed to IRL: imagery invoked includes animorphs on the moon and prehistoric amphibians at the bus stop, or lizards playing guitars connected via usb directly to the sun and powered by pure helium, hacktivist jaguars in mangy gamer chairs wearing paper sunglasses, or just regular old wooly mammoths reemerging from the blacktop.

Wild Life’s nine pieces make a consistently heavy program of thud and thonk that somehow manages to cultivate plenty of stylistic contrast, strikingly organic and wildly imaginative. Album-oriented listeners are treated to a thematic coherency that spans the 4/4 driving and sometimes chugging prog-house gurgle of “Prokofiev’s Dog” and the non-Burner desert acid psychedelia of “Lizards on the Sun” and still has room for the sublime in “Panda Mick”, a gorgeous emotive slice of electronica that conjures something between The Knife and Enya. This adventurous breadth to the material that confidently justifies the album format is a striking aspect to all three Free Range records, but has never been more pronounced than now, with an arc spanning the chasm between the haunted space kraut of “Jaguar Is Waiting” to “Goat In The Shell” with its CGI-cinematic d’n’b—think cyber heist scenario featuring the Word paperclip help avatar adorned in a raved up tracksuit. From primordial germ to synthetic multi-cerebellum’d synthetic being, the evolutionary arc on display in Wild Life is a truly special offering DKA is honored to present to its dedicated listeners human and animal alike.
